About this listing
About this space
Experience a true sense of peace and relaxation at this beautiful 18th Century converted mill.
Beautifully restored and set in the most stunning private gardens, the cottage really does offer it’s guests the most unique and ‘good for the soul’ experience!
The open plan kitchen, dining & sitting area with stunning beams & wood burner, is a great space for socializing.
Both king & double bedrooms mean there is space for all and the outstanding gardens & stream are great to explore.
The space
Allanton Mill Cottage is a truly stunning opportunity to stay in a property that will lure you back time and again.
Originally the grain store of the 18th century mill and part of the Duke of Buccleuch estate, the space was beautifully renovated in 2009 and has been maintained & upgraded regularly ever since. As you can imagine the cottage is in the perfect location as it sits in an elevated position above the stream which originally powered the mill itself.
By showcasing some of the original features such as the exposed stone wall and ceiling beams in the sitting room area, all the charm of the original building shines through but with comfortable additions such as the log burner for cooler months and cosy evenings.
The fully equipped, open plan kitchen is a great space for meal preparation whilst still socialising with the rest of your party.
Both bedrooms are a good size with plenty of room & storage, one with a super comfortable king size bed and one a double, both have beautiful views across the stream area and private gardens.
The cherry on top of all this? Although the cottage is joined to the original mill house, it boasts it’s own beautiful and extensive private gardens. Totally secluded, the split level garden begins with a charming patio area with outside furniture, the most idyllic place to sit with a morning coffee or evening glass of wine whilst listening to the stream as it makes it’s way past the cottage, stairs then lead to various terraced areas and down to a lawned space overlooking the stream and the perfect place for a picnic!
Once inside the cottage you will never want to leave, but, there are plenty of things to do and see in the area and throughout Dumfries & Galloway making the cottage the perfect base for exploring everything our beautiful region has to offer.
We look forward to welcoming you to Allanton Mill Cottage soon and please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions.

alison Merchant 02/10/2024Nice but….. Bed was really comfortable. And we loved the wood burner. Garden was lovely with a few buts.. The whole place needed a really good clean. There was dust and cobwebs everywhere. Bedroom windows were really dirty as was the shower. There’s an Amazon fire stick but it didn’t work and we found it incredibly hard to use the cooker as all the numbers and lettering had worn off. Don’t try and use the steps in the garden as they are a slippery disaster. Sheep in field adjoining garden. Not ideal in a pet friendly cottage. Also the pin drop takes you to the centre of the junction. Truly not an ideal place to stop and look around from the correct cottage. ... Read full reviewClose

madeleine Berry 05/07/2024We’ll be back to Dumfries and surrounding areas. The accommodation needs improvements.. The location was beautiful. The outlook over fields stunning and it was an easy location from which to explore the surrounding areas. The beds were comfortable and the peace and quiet wonderful. We loved visiting Nipford and Rockcliffe. Explored the nature reserve, Castle and cool Vintage shop in Glenchapel. The Vintage shop is a treasure trove of film posters, quirky artefacts and gorgeous ornaments and prints. The Southerness Lighthouse was another highlight. Everyone we met were lovely and recommended walking routes and restaurants.. There were many frustrations with the property. The toilet seat was sheared off and under the seat and in the toilet bowl was dirty. All cutlery and crockery needed re washed before use. All of the dials on the cooker had the numbers and images rubbed off making it difficult to use. The garden was a frustration as the access was problematic at the pathway was overgrown. We had looked forward to sitting in the garden, but it was dank and unwelcoming. Other reviewers mentioned welcoming hosts. We did not meet anyone although the adjacent house was occupied. ...
